Cheer Without Fear
Frosh Week - Without the torture and embarrassment
BY BONNIE GILLIS, University of Prince Edward Island
You've finally graduated from high school, hung your tassel on the rearview
mirror of your car and received your last 'congrats' card with a crisp
twenty-dollar bill inside. Now it's time to head to college. Whether you're
getting as far away from the rules and regulations of parents as possible, or
you're staying nice and close to those familiar smells and home-cooked meals,
college (as everyone's been telling you) is a challenging new world.
Many students' fears about the transition of starting college surround
orientation. Perhaps you've heard how upperclassmen sometimes decide to organize
initiations and hazing rituals known to many as Frosh Week? Yes, those wonderful
sophomores, juniors and seniors think that forcing you dear freshmen to perform
gross, silly and sometimes scary, acts of embarrassment in front of your fellow
classmates (and often the entire community) is a great way to introduce you to
campus life.
