Year By Year Timeline: 9th Grade
A year by year guide to preparing for college

College Planning Timeline

You want your student to make high school count. The next four years will go by very quickly. Look at how far he has come and how quickly he has gotten here! Soon it will be time for college - and the best college applications are by those who began working hard long before senior year, not by those who started late and had to play catch up.

Grades in high school are cumulative - they build from the first day on. Classes selected and grades earned now do matter. Encourage your student to build on a solid foundation - not in quick sand. Check out the articles in the student section of our site to assist your child in building that foundation.

Here are some other tips to help you help your student.

In the Fall of 9th Grade Year

  • Job shadow or participate in career day, if possible
  • Begin constructing a resume
  • Discuss post high school plans with school counselor and parent/guardians
  • Begin to discuss college costs with parents/guardians

In the Spring of 9th Grade Year

  • Take the most challenging course of study available
  • Join clubs and activities in area of interest
  • Build relationships with peers, teachers, counselors, activity moderators and employers
  • Select a service area to volunteer with
  • Check out the standardized testing policies/opportunities at your school
  • Develop good study habits
